Behind the USA 250 Crosswords

Welcome to Arkadium’s “USA 250” week within my Daily Crossword. As far as I know, this is the first time in its 112-year history, that an entire week of crosswords has been devoted to a single subject.

As you might imagine, an event worth celebrating with an entire week of crosswords, doesn’t crop up very often. Perhaps the last such event was America’s bicentennial year of 1976, 50 years ago. Back then, I was just a few years out of school, when crosswords for me were just a solver’s daily newspaper habit. But I do remember all the media coverage leading up to that July 4th, most memorably for me were the “Bicentennial Minutes” broadcast by CBS nightly for many months. It was that memory that started me thinking about what I might do for America’s Semiquincentennial (a word too big to fit in a daily crossword, by the way).

I started making a list of all the various subjects I might do as a Sunday puzzle theme. But so many different theme possibilities occurred to me, more than enough for an entire week. From there, I was able of figure out seven different themes from the Sunday through Friday, July 4th, 2026. The trickiest part of this for me was slotting the themes in such a way so that the Monday-through-Saturday gradual increase in difficulty would be maintained.

Today’s the day! Saturday is usually the day for a tough themeless puzzle, but this one isn’t quite themeless. The two 15-letter answers have everything to do with this special day, even though the clue for 7 Down refers to a film.

The play is a popular staple for local and regional theaters, and was revived for Broadway twice after its original production of 1969, most recently in 2022.

This excerpt comes from what is probably the best-remembered part of the Declaration. To help you along, each of the four theme clues includes words that either precede or follow the answers.

All about places and things named for the Founding Fathers. Yes, 52 Across really was named for one!

Two of the long answers are among the most famous signers of the Declaration, 58 Across being a “very big name”.

The usual all-easy clues and answers for a Monday, the answer to 39 Across is a nickname for the colleagues of Thomas Jefferson at Independence Hall.

Happy 250th to you! The week begins with this puzzle of my creation. The five parts of the theme come verbatim from the very top of the parchment document that this anniversary is all about.
